A BIT ABOUT ME!
I’m a Wizard ... wait a Wizard you might ask ... Yeah I train with a cool group of people known as the Wollongong Wizards, which has a unique international flavour about it for a training group!
We all lend our Wizardry to the ITU World Triathlon Series, with aspiration to make Olympic Teams and win World Titles. We are lead by the master Jamie Turner who has coached me for the past 5 years. We get to train in some pretty unique and cool places being based in Wollongong during the Australian Summer and then chasing that sun to Vitoria in the Basque Country (Spain) for the European Summer. Both provide world class environments for the Wizards to thrive.
How did I get the chance to train with such an awesome group? I once upon a time raced as an Age Grouper and won the 18-19 Olympic Distance World Championships on the Gold Coast in 2009 and was lucky enough to get the opportunity to have a try out with Jamie’s squad which I grabbed with both hands and have never looked back since.
Rewind a number of years and I was that normal Aussie kid enjoying the sunshine whilst growing up and enjoying the beach and sport in general. Bunbury, in the south of Western Australia was an awesome place to grow up and it allowed me to get out and give everything a try. I did a lot of Cross Country running during my early school years and played a lot of Aussie Rules Football, which could have had potential to go further if I had bulked up and chosen that path. Though ultimately Triathlon won out as I completed my first one when I was 13 and was hooked from the get go. I never thought back then that I would be doing it professionally a number of years down the track.
There have been huge investments along the way like moving away from home and living and training on the other side of the country away from family and friends. Though these investments are all worth it when the investments return a chance to represent your country at Olympics, Commonwealth Games and World Championships, which so few get to experience!
The 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games were a highlight with a Bronze medal in the mixed teams relay. Though my proudest moment to date would be becoming an Olympian in 2016 at Rio. I’ve had fifteen top ten finishes in World Triathlon Series events with a best being 4th at London WTS 2015 and Gold Coast WTS 2016.
