Where in the world can you get an option of gold sprinkles on your cappuccino instead of the regular chocolate sprinkles? Or just casually get gold from the ‘Gold to Go’ vending machine? Abu Dhabi, that’s where!! Unfortunately I didn’t get to try either, as I was there to race a Triathlon, though pretty cool to think you can eat gold in a weird kind of way…
Unfortunately there was no gold medals for me at the first round of the Wold Triathlon Series in Abu Dhabi though I did record an 8th place and gave myself a gold star. Interestingly it was my 11th top 10 finish at a World Triathlon Series race and has got the 2016 season off to a solid start.
The race itself didn’t really get off to the start I wanted with a very off swim. I was down on what I expected exiting the water in the large third chase pack, which left a bit of work to do if I wanted to get back into this one.
Luckily the group was motivated on two wheels and the race would all come back together. With such a large front pack positioning became the key as the ride took in tight technical sections as it rolled around the precinct of Abu Dhabi Sailing club waterfront.
The run was tough to say the least. You never know what kind of race form you are in just going off training. Though with a consistent Aussie summer I was quietly confident in my abilities on what I could deliver. After a strong first half I faded a fair amount in the backend and a bit more than what I was hoping finishing in 8th, though very happy as to where things are at knowing there is a lot of room for improvement to take things to that next level.
So what’s next?
I’m currently in New Plymouth preparing for the next round of the series, which goes to the Gold Coast in a month’s time. The training here from what the Wizards and I have seen so far is world class to say the least. I’m eager to get stuck into this next block.
Oh and did I mention I’m treated like a king whilst here with breakfast, lunch and dinner on the table each day, but more on that next time and who the awesome chef is!
